The original quotation in the title comes from Carl Andre and is: 'A thing is a hole in a thing it is not'. Later Robert Smithson used this quote as a title for a short text about boredom. In the text he pleas for an esthetic method in which anthropologiy and linguistics go together. He wants to extract concepts out of existing sense-data through direct perception.
